Did it ever occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, verbal language was developed mostly for the purpose of lying? Lying and hypocrisy are a vital part of society and having only the true primal signals of your body is a dead give-away for your emotions and intentions and conflicts are harder to avoid. It is harder to manipulate and use other individuals without spoken language, you have to use force and status. The need of constant masking and lying is more than obvious and since faking body language is very hard or impossible, and the demand for detailed communication grew, we got two big arguments in favor of creating a verbal way to express ourselves, even if falsely.
The ability to conjure up untruths is proven as not a solely human ability, but it is attributed to species living in groups, having to compromise and deal with more complicated relationships. The importance of language as means to communicate sophisticated and detailed problems should not be underestimated, there is no body language for "The conflict in Israel is once again in full-bloom." but then again we didn't need such messages sent until much later in our history.
So just think about it, was lying the main motivation to start speaking?
All these wonderful poems and novels- spawned by the mandatory need of deceit.
